During his time as a resident at the YMCA from 2023 to 2025, R.J. Waiters discovered more than just a place to live; he found a community. He saw the men around him not as strangers, but as friends and brothers. With a heart for service and a spirit of unity, R.J. dedicated himself to fostering a supportive and faith-filled environment, transforming the residence into a place of connection and hope when he could.
His passion was infectious, burning brightly even amidst his immense health challenges. Despite his own mental health struggles and physical challenges, R.J. found strength and solace in surrendering to his faith, which fueled his relentless dedication. He requested donations to be brought in by his father for the residential community, ensuring the men had some things they need.
R.J. organized a Father's Day celebration, asking his father to host a large event to honor the community's fathers. He also requested his father to bring Bibles and devotionals to provide spiritual support for himself and the men in the residential community.
His vision was amplified by his profound out-of-body experience in 2021. After initially passing away, R.J. described being given instructions by "The Council" at his judgment on how to return, get things right, and finish his race well. This personal journey and deep spiritual conviction fueled his desire to create a space where everyone felt seen, valued, and uplifted, proving that even in adversity, community can thrive.
A moving memorial tribute created by the YMCA celebrating R.J.’s life and spirit.
